Meet the authors
Chris is an Assistant Professor in Property Law at the University of Nottingham. Within this role, he sees his central task as showing students that land law can be a rich, rewarding and exciting subject. He feels it is vital that the subject is taught with enthusiasm, passion and with an eye on bringing its inherent vibrancy to the surface and to life.
Chris believes that adopting a research-led, rigorously-academic yet accessible approach to teaching land law is the best way to engage students and instil in them a desire to delve deeper into the fascinating inner world of the subject. This is the ethos that he follows in his text book, Land Law – to be published in March 2018.
In 2015, Chris was awarded the Lord Dearing Award for world-class contribution to teaching and learning and, in 2017, was recognised as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Emma Lees is a University Lecturer in Environmental and Property Law at the University of Cambridge, and a fellow of Fitzwilliam College. Emma researches all areas of property and environmental law, but focuses specifically on land registration; issues surrounding the implied or otherwise non-deliberate creation of equitable interests; and landlord and tenant law, in relation to land.
Specifically with regards to land law textbook writing, her approach is, as far as possible, to help students to understand the ‘logic’ of the land law system. Emma sees this subject as being like a jigsaw; it is very difficult to understand and analyse an individual sub-topic, without seeing the bigger picture. In part, this is about recognising the wider context within which land law rules operate, both legal, and socio-economic and cultural. In part too, it is about understanding the goals of the system and why rules have been developed as they have over the last one hundred years.
About the book
The primary aim of The Principles of Land Law is to allow the more advanced student to take their knowledge beyond that of an introductory textbook by providing them with an analytical framework to help them understand the logic of land law so that they can deepen their comprehension and form their own conclusions. Due to publish in 2019.
Emma Waring is a Lecturer at the University of York teaching Property Law with particular research interests in the expropriation of land, property theory, and Art law. The University of York is a law school which bases their entire curriculum around problem-based learning. As such, Emma is very enthusiastic about the benefits that a problem-based approach can bring to students, and is knowledgeable about how it can be used to promote student understanding. She has studied at the University of Cambridge and at Harvard University, and went on to qualify as a solicitor with Allen & Overy, before teaching at The Open University and at Cambridge.
About the book
Land Law takes a practical approach to the subject: each chapter opens with a ‘problem’ scenario, the relevant parts of which are considered at regular intervals throughout the narrative as they become relevant to the concepts being discussed. Also including ‘Counterpoint’ and ‘Pause for reflection’ features which aim to encourage critical thinking and engagement with debates, Waring’s book will help students engage with this reputedly-difficult subject by demonstrating the law in action as well as describing it in the abstract.
